comes to your room, and you are told what something costs before it is done.
Why a visiting doctor, rather than a waiting room
Mai Khao is a long, quiet stretch of beach — resorts, villas and national park, with
very little in between. That is why people choose it, and it is also why the nearest medical care is
some way off. Our own premises is on 152/1 Bandon Road at Cherng Talay, Thalang,
about 25 minutes by road south.
For most of what goes wrong on a holiday, the useful answer is not directions. It is a doctor
arriving at your door with the equipment in a bag: someone to look at the child with a fever, clean
the graze properly, put up a drip, or take blood and send it to the laboratory. That is what this

Why the hours are the whole point
Hospital outpatient departments keep office hours. Pharmacies close. Most of what goes wrong on a
holiday does not: it goes wrong late, after a long dinner, on the last day before a flight, or at four
in the morning when a child’s fever will not come down and nobody in the villa knows what to do next.
A doctor is reachable every hour of every day, including public holidays. Nobody here minds being

A normal week here
The pattern is consistent enough to describe. Sun, first of all: people who arrived pale and spent
day one by the pool without shade, and the heat exhaustion
that follows an afternoon walked along an unshaded beach.
Sunburn that has gone past uncomfortable, and children who have
stopped drinking.
Then stomachs, usually two or three days in — food poisoning
and travellers’ diarrhoea, which between them account
for more calls than anything else. Fevers that need
dengue excluded before anyone relaxes.
Scooter injuries from the road down to Thalang, and the
exhaust burns almost every rider collects eventually. And a
steady stream of people who need a certificate or
paperwork for an insurer and have left it slightly late.

Most have no medical records with them, no Thai, and a reasonable wish to understand what is wrong

What can be done in your room

- Prescription refills when medication is lost or has run out
- Certificates, fit-to-fly clearance and insurance paperwork
What needs the clinic or a hospital instead
Some things genuinely cannot be done in a hotel room: x-rays, scans, anything requiring a procedure
room, and rabies immunoglobulin, which is stocked only at certain hospitals. In those cases you will be
told so plainly and directed to the right place rather than sold a visit that cannot help.
The nearest premises able to see you in person is at Cherng Talay, Thalang —

The airport, which is closer than you think
Phuket International Airport sits at the southern end of Mai Khao, which makes this one
of the few parts of the island where the airport is minutes away rather than an hour. That matters for
anyone who falls ill on the last morning, or who arrives already unwell after a long flight — see

Costs, said out loud
You are told the price before treatment starts, not after — including the call-out itself. Payment is
at the end of the visit, cash or card, and you are left with an itemised receipt and an English medical
report: the two documents almost every travel insurer asks for.
If you are insured, say so at the start rather than the end. It changes what paperwork the doctor
produces while still with you, and chasing it from another country afterwards is far harder than asking
for it now.

When the answer is an ambulance rather than a visit
Call 1669 for chest pain, breathlessness at rest, stroke symptoms, a head injury with
vomiting or confusion, uncontrolled bleeding, a seizure, a near-drowning, or anybody who cannot be
roused. Those need an emergency department directly, not a doctor travelling to you — see
