Sometimes you would rather be seen in person — for a wound that needs stitching, a test that needs a laboratory, or simply because you would rather sit in front of a doctor. This page is about the nearest walk-in clinic to Mai Khao: where it is, how long the journey takes, and when it is worth making.
Where it actually is
The clinic is on Bandon Road in Cherng Talay, south of Mai Khao. It is open around the clock, takes walk-ins with no appointment, and has English-speaking doctors on site.
From the Mai Khao resorts it is about twenty-five minutes by road in normal traffic — south on Thepkasattri, then west towards Cherng Talay. Longer in the evening rush or heavy rain.
Being straight about that distance matters. There is no closer clinic of ours, and the honest question is whether the journey is worth it or whether a doctor should come to you instead.
When the journey is worth making
Anything needing the laboratory or the procedure room, because those cannot travel:
- Cuts needing stitches or a wound needing proper cleaning
- Blood tests where the result changes what happens next
- Removal of spines, glass or foreign bodies
- Abscess drainage and other minor procedures
- A full health check with a panel of tests
- Anything where an x-ray referral is likely
For those, going in person is one journey instead of a visit that becomes a journey anyway.
When it is not
When moving is the problem. Vomiting every ten minutes, a small child at three in the morning, somebody too dizzy to stand, or a leg that will not take weight — the drive makes all of those worse.
When you have no transport. Mai Khao is not a place you can easily hail something at two in the morning, and a resort will not always arrange a car at that hour.

Getting there from Mai Khao
Most resorts will arrange a car, and it is worth asking rather than assuming. A taxi or Grab from Mai Khao to Cherng Talay is a straightforward fare, though availability drops sharply late at night.
If you are driving yourself, it is Thepkasattri Road south, then west on Route 4030 towards Cherng Talay and Bandon Road. The map pin is more reliable than the street number.
Bring your passport if it is to hand, any medication you take or a photo of the boxes, and your insurance details. None of it is required in order to be treated.
What being seen there involves
No appointment, no referral, no Thai residency requirement. You arrive, you give your name and roughly what has happened, and you see a doctor.

Payment at the end, cash or card, with an itemised receipt and an English medical report, which are the two documents an insurer will ask for.
The hospitals, and when to go straight to one
Phuket has full private and government hospitals, most of them south towards Thalang and Phuket Town. For anything serious those are the right destination and we will refer you with a call ahead — see hospital transfer and referral.
Go directly, calling 1669, for chest pain, breathlessness at rest, stroke signs, a head injury with vomiting or confusion, uncontrolled bleeding, a seizure, or anybody who cannot be woken.
In those situations do not come to a clinic first and do not wait for a doctor to drive to you. Minutes are the whole thing.
Deciding which, without guessing
You do not have to work this out alone, and it is the commonest thing people ring about.
Describe what has happened by phone or WhatsApp and you will be told plainly: come in, we will come to you, go to a hospital, or that it can safely wait until morning — see doctor on call.
That call is free, it takes a minute or two, and it saves a great many unnecessary journeys in both directions.
Follow-up without the round trip
Plenty of treatment needs a second look — dressings changed, stitches out, a wound checked because it looks angrier than yesterday, an injection course finished.

Costs, and hearing them first
Prices are given before treatment rather than after, whether you are seen at the clinic or in your room. Nothing is added to the bill without being mentioned.
Private medicine in Thailand is generally good and generally cheaper than at home, but the range between providers is wide and travellers are used to being surprised. Hearing the number while you can still say no is the point.
