Why the roads here are deceptive
Thepkasattri and the airport approach roads are wide, straight and considerably faster than the congested streets further south. People relax on them.
The beach road through Mai Khao is quiet, sandy at the edges and unlit at night. Sand on tarmac at a bend is the classic single-vehicle fall here, and it happens at speed rather than in traffic.
Add rain in the monsoon, which lifts oil off the surface in the first minutes of a downpour, and the first ten minutes of rain are the most dangerous of the day.
Head injury, and the next 24 hours
A helmet does not make a head injury impossible, and a knock that seemed minor at the roadside is the one to watch.
Go to hospital immediately for vomiting more than once, worsening headache, confusion, drowsiness or difficulty waking, a seizure, unequal pupils, weakness, slurred speech, or clear fluid from the nose or ear.
Somebody should stay with you overnight after any head knock. If you are travelling alone and have hit your head, say so — sleeping it off alone in a resort room is exactly the wrong plan.
