Window periods — the part that matters
A test cannot detect an infection that has not yet produced what the test looks for. This is the single most important thing to understand, and it is why timing changes the answer.
Modern fourth-generation HIV tests are reliable at four weeks and conclusive at six. Chlamydia and gonorrhoea are detectable within one to two weeks. Syphilis usually by six weeks, hepatitis B and C from six weeks to three months.
So a test taken three days after a risk is close to meaningless for HIV, however reassuring the result feels. Say when the exposure was, and you will be told what today’s test can and cannot rule out.
If the exposure was very recent
Post-exposure prophylaxis for HIV — PEP — is a course of medication that can substantially reduce the risk of infection, but it has to start within 72 hours and works better the sooner it begins.

Symptoms worth acting on now
Discharge, burning on passing urine, pain in the testicles, ulcers or sores, an unexplained rash, or pelvic pain. Any of those means being examined rather than waiting for a window period.
Symptomatic infection is often treatable immediately, before results, because the clinical picture is clear enough to act on.
Untreated chlamydia and gonorrhoea can cause lasting harm, particularly to fertility, and both are frequently silent in women — which is exactly why testing without symptoms is worth doing.
One local complication worth knowing about: gonorrhoea in this part of the world has developed resistance to several antibiotics that still work elsewhere. That is why treatment here follows regional guidance rather than whatever you were prescribed at home years ago, and why a test of cure is sometimes recommended a couple of weeks afterwards rather than assuming the first course worked.
